Bio
Robert RL Gray, MD is board-certified in both Orthopaedic Surgery and Hand + Microvascular Surgery. He holds an AB and MD from Brown University and trained at Rush and Mayo Clinic.
He treats pediatric and adult conditions of the hand and upper limb from simple to complex reconstruction and salvage.
Dr. Gray lectures nationally and internationally, is active in medical device design, and holds 2 patents.

Dr. Gray completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at Brown University in Providence, RI as part of their combined Program in Liberal Medical Education. He then matched into the combined Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago, IL--a program consistently ranked in the top 10 nationwide. At RUSH, he completed trauma surgery training at Stroger Hospital of Cook County and Rockford Orthopaedic Associates (now OrthoIllinois) in Rockford, IL. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Gunnar Andersson, MD, PhD Award for best Chief Resident by his co-residents.
He spent a year in Rochester, MN at Mayo Clinic completing a Fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery. There, he was trained in all aspects of general hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery including brachial plexus reconstruction, and microsurgery including vascularized bone grafting.
After completing training, he practiced and taught hand surgery at University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine in Miami, FL. There, he focused primarily on complex trauma, reconstruction, and limb salvage and operated at Bascom Palmer hospital as well as Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was also selected as best Attending Surgeon Teacher by the Orthopaedic Residents.
He has now returned to Chicago's North Shore to bring the highest level of orthopaedic hand and microvascular surgical care to his patients here. Practicing at NorthShore University HealthSystem, he operates in Evanston, Skokie, Glenview, and Highland Park and sees patients in Skokie, Glenview and Lincolnshire. He is a nationally and internationally sought-after lecturer and teaches Hand Surgery Fellows from the University of Chicago, and Orthopaedic Surgery Residents from the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois—Chicago (UIC).
Dr. Gray is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of the American Association for Hand Surgery and the American Society of Surgery of the Hand, having attained the Subspecialty Certificate of Surgery of the Hand (formerly the CAQ)
